CHA Veterans Replacement Headstone Project

The Concordia Heritage Association, in collaboration with Zamorano’s Monument Co., has undertaken an admirable initiative to preserve the legacy of our fallen heroes. Through their dedicated efforts, they have launched the Veterans Replacement Headstone Project at Concordia Cemetery. This noble endeavor seeks to replace weathered military memorials, ensuring that these sacred markers proudly and respectfully honor the men and women who bravely served our nation. With meticulous care and attention to detail, the Association is meticulously identifying deteriorating headstones and replacing them with pristine replacements, meticulously inscribed with the names and vital information of the honored veterans. This project not only pays tribute to these courageous individuals, but also demonstrates the unwavering commitment to preserving the rich history and heritage of Concordia Cemetery.

CAMP CONCORDIA

The United States Army's first post in what is now El Paso was established in 1849 at a place called Smith's Ranch. Located in the current downtown area, the post was abandoned in 1851 when the troops moved to New Mexico's Fort Fillmore.

A second El Paso post was erected at Magoffinsville in 1853. During the Civil War, the post was occupied by both Union and Confederate forces. In early 1868, flooding from the Rio Grande caused major damage to the post which was then relocated three miles east to a new site on "El Rancho de la Concordia", owned by early El Paso settlers Hugh & Juana Stephenson, and renamed Camp Concordia.

The following year, 1869, the post was christened with a new name - Fort Bliss. The Fort lasted nine years at this location before being dismantled in January 1877. The actual site of this original Fort Bliss is located at 4001 Durazno Street, just below the Hwy 54 and I-10 Interchange.
